Dr Julie Norman is an Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations at University College London (UCL), and the Director of UCL’s Israel-Palestine Initiative. She is also a Senior Associate Fellow on the Middle East at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

She is the author of Gaza: The Dream and the Nightmare and multiple books and articles on political resistance in the Middle East, including The Palestinian Prisoners Movement and The Second Palestinian Intifada. She has also published widely on nonviolence, peacebuilding, extremism, and protracted conflicts.

In addition to her academic writing, she has worked she has worked with various NGOs in Israel-Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, and Iraq, and she has provided expert insights to the UK Parliament, UK Foreign Office, UK Ministry of Defence, and US Department of State. She is a frequent commentator on Middle East politics and international conflict on the BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets.

She holds a PhD in International Relations from American University in Washington, DC, and a BA from Duke University. She has held teaching positions at McGill University and Queen’s University Belfast, and she has held fellowships at MIT, Dartmouth College, and the University of Notre Dame.

Assistant Professor Farid Boussaid (University of Amsterdam) will act as discussant.
