ACMES Annual lecture: The structure of genocide in Palestine

It is now more than three years since Israel began its destruction of Palestinian society in Gaza. In this lecture, Martin Shaw, one of the first scholars to recognise this as genocide in 2023, will draw on sociological, historical and legal approaches to explore connections between the current destruction and the larger structure of genocidal relationships in Palestine during the last century.

Shaw will examine Zionist eliminationism and the forced removals of 1947-8 (the Nakba) and 1967 in the context of the general patterns of European settler colonialism, exclusive East European nationalism and competitive decolonisation. He will discuss how practices often described as “ethnic cleansing” may function as part of genocidal processes, engaging both Raphael Lemkin’s original framework and the Genocide Convention. He will also explore occupation as a context of genocide and the expansion of the genocidal side of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, especially in the 21st Century.

The lecture will conclude with an assessment of current genocidal threats both in Gaza and in the other zones in which Israeli actors are operating.
