ACMES Thesis Prize - Awards Ceremony

On 15 December, the Amsterdam Centre for Middle Eastern Studies Amsterdam (ACMES) will award two prizes for Best BA thesis and Best MA thesis in Middle Eastern Studies for work completed at the UvA during the academic year 2015/16. The awards ceremony will take place after the last lecture of the Fall Lecture series, delivered by Khaled Fahmy.

Four theses have been shorlisted for both prizes. The following candidates have been nominated for the Master’s Thesis Prize:

  • Slimane Aguersif
    'Liberaal islamisme: de compatibiliteit van de islamistische overtuigingen van de Tunesische politieke partij al-Nahḍa en het politiek liberalisme van John Rawls.' 
  • Lena Essing
    'International Adoption of Syrian Refugee Children in Turkey.'
  • Zola Can
    'Alawieten in Hatay in het Turkije van Atatürk tot Erdoğan. Een onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van de relatie tussen de Turkse staat en de alawitische minderheid in Hatay.'
  • Laura Sofie van der Reijden
    'A new kind of war: a new journalism. How is war journalism changing due to the particular features of the ISIS conflict in Syria and Iraq?'

The following candidates have been nominated for the Bachelor’s Thesis Prize:

  • Thomas Bartels
    'Sectarianism as the continuation of politics by other means. A study on the origins of the contemporary sectarian behaviour of Saudi Arabia and Iran.'
  • Ilkay Kizil
    'Voorbij het secularisme: heroverweging van het islamisme in de Turkse politiek.'
  • Joost Vintges
    'Cementing United Jerusalem. On Architecture, Archeology, and Urbanism in Occupied East-Jerusalem, 1967-1973.'
  • Hannah Visser
    'A Geography of Cairo’s Informal Waste Management. The Necessity of a more Inclusive Approach towards the Zabbālīn.

After the lecture by Khaled Fahmy entitled 'Medicine and Law in Nineteenth-Century Egypt', ACMES director and chair of the ACMES Thesis Prize jury, Dr. Farid Boussaid, will present the findings of the jury and announce the winners.
